The Power Situation in Norway as of 08 June 2005

Lysaker, 08 June May 2005

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

During week 22, the inflow to the Norwegian hydropower reservoirs was below normal. This is mainly caused by cold weather, which delays the snow melting. Reduced production in Swedish nuclear power plants has contributed to increased electricity export to Sweden.

Temperatures below normal have resulted in snow melting below normal for this time of year. During week 22, the inflow to the Norwegian reservoirs was 5.1 TWh, which is 1.4 TWh below normal. The filling level in the reservoirs increased by 3.6 percentage points during week 22, giving a filling level of 41.8 percent at the end of the week. In Sweden, the filling level was 43.3 percent, after an increase of 5.2 percentage points from last week.

The aggregated production from the Swedish nuclear power plants in week 22 shows that approximately 50 percent of the total capacity was shut down due to maintenance. This can have contributed to increased prices in Sweden. Since the affected nuclear power plants are situated in the south of Sweden, there have, according to Svenska Kraftnät (SvK), been periods during the week where it has been necessary to limit the export capacity from Southern Sweden to Denmark, Poland and Germany in order to maintain balance in the Swedish national power system.
