The Power Situation in Norway as of 12 January 2005

Lysaker, 12 January 2005

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Considerable amounts of precipitation contributed to the highest inflow of water to the Norwegian reservoirs ever registered during week 1. After a drop of 0.5 percentage points, the reservoir filling level was 70.0 percent at the end of week 1. That is 0.2 percentage points above normal. In Sweden, the reservoir filling level fell by 2.4 percentage points.

Mild weather, and a holiday in Sweden and Finland 6 January, gave little growth in the Nordic consumption from week 53 to week 1. Much precipitation and high inflow of water has resulted in increased Norwegian hydropower production. Higher prices in Germany, and reduced Finnish production, have given increased Swedish and Danish export to these areas. Further, Swedish export to Poland has increased. This has created demand for the increased Norwegian production, and hence, the Norwegian net import of electricity fell considerably from week 53 to week 1.
