The Power Situation in Norway as of 30 May 2007

Lysaker, 30 May 2007

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

High Norwegian electricity production
Snowmelt, healthy reservoir levels and more precipitation than normal contributed to high Norwegian electricity production in week 21. During the week it was produced above 2.3 TWh. This is the highest production in this week since 2000. As a consequence of this the price in Southern Norway has dropped from 17.1 øre/kWh in week 20, to 16.7 øre/kWh in week 21. Several nuclear power plants in Sweden and Finland is currently out of operation due to yearly maintenance. Among other factors like small amounts of wind, this has increased prices in the rest of the Nordic area.

The Norwegian inflow was 5.1 TWh or 90 percent of normal in week 21. At the same time the high production implied an increase in reservoir levels of mere 3.4 percentage points during week 21. At the end of week 21 the reservoir level in Norway was 48.1 percent and 3.7 percentage points above normal. In Sweden the reservoir level gained 7.6 percentage points to 51.3 percent. At time being the level in Sweden is 9.2 percentage points above normal.
