The Power Situation in Norway as of 11 October 2006

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Increased reservoir level and high imports

The nuclear power plants that were commissioned in Sweden contributed to a 15 percent increased electricity production in Sweden from week 39 to 40. Hence the Swedish exports to Norway increased and in week 40 the total Norwegian import was 350 GWh. Consequently, the electricity production in Norway fell with 15 percent.

In week 40 the effective inflow in Norway was 2.7 TWh and 5 percent above normal. Low production and the inflow gave an increased reservoir level in Norway of 1.3 percentage points. At the end of week 40 the level was 63.5 percent and 24.5 percentage points below normal. In Sweden the reservoir level is 65.5 percent, after a 1.7 percentage point increase during week 40.

The wholesale prices on electricity at the Nordic power exchange, Nord Pool, dropped from week 39 to 40. The decline in Norway was about 5 percent, while the reduction in the other parts of the Nordic region was greater. Sweden experienced a 15 percentage drop, and in Denmark and Germany the average prices fell with almost 25 percent.
