The Power Situation in Norway as of 4 October 2006

Lysaker, 04 October 2006

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Increased Nordic power production, increased water reservoir level and reduced power prices
The Swedish power production increased by almost 5 percent from week 38 to week 39. The main reason was the re-start of nuclear power plants toward the end of the week. An increased power production was also observed in the other Nordic countries. In all, the Nordic power production increased by almost 4 percent compared to week 38.

The inflow to the Norwegian water reservoirs was 2.1 TWh, or 20 percent less than normal in week 39. The reservoir levels increased with 0.4 percentage points to 62.2 percent at the end of the week. The present level is 25.4 percentage points below normal. In Sweden the reservoir level is 63.8 percent, after a 0.3 percentage point drop during week 38.

The prices at the Nordic electricity exchange fell from week 38 to week 39. A household with a spot price contract and a margin of 2.2 øre/kWh would pay 66.6 øre/kWh in week 39. This implies a price reduction of 5 percent compared to week 38. In week 39 such a contract was 15 percent cheaper than the standard variable contract of the dominant suppliers.
