The Power Situation in Norway as of 27 September 2006

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Low electricity demand and increased Norwegian import
Compared with the corresponding weeks last year, the electricity consumption in Norway the previous four weeks has decreased with 10 percent. Also in Sweden the consumption has been considerably lower in these weeks. Still, lower reservoir levels than normal and technical problems in Swedish nuclear power plants, have contributed to high imports to the Nordic area, and in particular Norway and Sweden. About 12 percent of the total electricity demand in Norway and Sweden was imported in week 38. The Norwegian import increased from 28 GWh in week 37 to 100 GWh in week 38.

The inflow to the Norwegian reservoirs was 2.2 TWh, or 10 percent less than normal in week 38. The reservoir levels increased with 0.6 percentage points to 61.8 percent at the end of the week. The present level is 26.5 percentage points below normal. In Sweden the reservoir level is 63.5 percent, after a 0.2 percentage point drop during week 38.
