The Power Situation in Norway as of 20 September 2006

Lysaker, 20 September 2006

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Small amounts of precipitation and Norwegian net import
The precipitation in week 37 was 70 percent below normal. The inflow to Norwegian water reservoirs was 1.8 TWh which is also below normal. However, the inflow was equal to the Norwegian power generation and the water level remained unchanged from week 36. At the end of week 37 the water reservoir level was 61.2 percent. This level is 26.4 percentage points below normal. In Sweden the reservoir level increased by 0.3 percentage points to 63.7 percent.

The Swedish power generation increased by seven percent from week 36 to week 37. The main reason was the return of two nuclear power plants. A larger part of the Swedish power consumption was covered by domestic generation and resulted in reduced net import to Sweden. A few Swedish nuclear plants are still inoperative due to lack of approval from the Swedish authorities. The Norwegian power exchange with Sweden was almost in balance in week 37 while Norway still had a net import from Denmark. Hence, Norway had a net import for the first time since week 22.
