The Power Situation in Norway as of 16 August 2006

Lysaker, 16 August 2006

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Still low inflow - increased Nordic power import
The effective inflow Norway in week 32 was about half of normal due to low precipitation and drought in several mountain areas. Multiple Swedish nuclear reactors are still inoperative because of technical problems. It is still not clarified when the reactors will be back in operation.

The average Nordic electricity price increased further in week 32, while the German prices fell. This contributed to a 50 percent increase in Nordic net import from week 31 to week 32. In all, the Nordic import was about 0.5 TWh last week. During the three last weeks the Nordic region has imported about 1 TWh, mainly from Russia and Germany. The Norwegian net export fell by 30 percent from week 31 to week 32. However, it is still Norwegian net export, mainly due to low Swedish nuclear power production.

The reservoir level fell by 0.7 percentage points in week 32. At the end of the week the level in Norwegian water reservoirs was 59.4 percent. The reservoir level is lowest in South-Norway (56.0 percent). In Middle - and North-Norway the water reservoir level is 66.7 percent.
