The power situation in Norway as of 2 January 2008

Lysaker, 2 January 2008
Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

High Norwegian power import in the last week of 2007

It was nearly full import of electricity to Norway in week 52. Total Norwegian net import was 334 GWh. It is the highest import since week 40 in 2006. The Norwegian power production was 2 414 GWh in week 52. It is 27 percent lower than in the week before. The decrease is related to lower Nordic power prices resulting from high wind power production and low power consumption in the Christmas week.

The elspot price in Germany decreased by nearly 70 percent from week 51 to 52. The prices decreased less in Norway, since hydro power producers are able to store water for later use. In Southern-Norway the price fell by 5 percent from week 51 to 52. In Middle-Norway the price decreased by 20 percent, while it was a reduction of 15 percent in Northern-Norway. In week 52 the prices in Middle- and Northern-Norway were about 5 øre/kWh lower in Southern-Norway.

The inflow to the Norwegian reservoirs was 1.5 TWh in week 52. That is 40 percent above the normal level. The reservoir level was 77 percent at the end of week 52. This implies a reduction of 1.0 percentage point relative to the week before. The reservoir level was 5.4 percentage points higher than normal at the turn of the year.
