The power situation in Norway as of 9 January 2008

Lysaker, 9 January 2008
Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Reservoir levels still high

The inflow to the Norwegian power system was 0.9 TWh last week. The Norwegian power production was 3.1 TWh. The reservoir level thereby went down 2.6 percentage points to 74.4 percent at the end of the week. The reservoir level is now 4.6 percentage points above normal.

Power prices in the Nordic area increased compared to the week before. The increase is mainly due lower demand, higher wind power production and thereby low prices in the Christmas holyday. Higher prices contributed to an increase of 30 percent in Norwegian power production. As a consequence there was 123 GWh net Norwegian exports of electricity in week 1, as apposed to 334 GWh net imports the week before.

We are now in the Kyoto period, and the number of quotas for CO2 emissions has been reduced. It has not been possible to store emission rights from 2007 to 2008. Thereby, there was a large increase in emission prices from around zero in 2007 to 189 kroner/ton in 2008. Higher emission prices increases production costs in thermal power production units.
