The power situation in Norway as of 16 January 2008

Lysaker, 16 January 2008
Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Warmer weather and lower consumption
Warmer weather led to a decrease in the Norwegian power consumption from week 1 to week 2. This was in spite of the two holydays at the beginning of week 1. Lower consumption contributed to a decrease in the Norwegian power production as compared with the week before.

The production in week 2 was 3033GWh. With a consumption of 2945 GWh the Norwegian net export was 88 GWh in week 2. It was 172 GWh Norwegian net import in the same week the year before. The inflow to the Norwegian reservoirs was 0,8 TWh in week 2. This is about normal. The last six months the inflow has been 63,5 TWh. That is 7,8 TWh above normal and 5,0 TWh more than in the corresponding period the year before. The Norwegian reservoir level fell by 2,7 percentage points during week 2 to 71,1 TWh at the end of the week. The reservoir level is now 4,9 percentage points above the median level of the week, and 6,4 percentage points higher than in the corresponding week last year.

Despite the consumption decrease, it was small changes in the spot prices of the Norwegian elspot areas. This is connected with an increase in the consumption of the other Nordic elspot areas.
