MCLEAN, Va., Feb. 11, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has appointed three vice presidents to its Information Technology (IT) sector, which provides advanced IT solutions, engineering and business services for government and commercial clients.

Samuel Abbate has been named vice president of wireless technologies and program manager for the New York City wireless program, Doug McVicar has been appointed vice president of the company's organization supporting the Virginia Information Technology Infrastructure Partnership, and Edward Sturms has been named vice president of infrastructure solutions.
"Each of these executives brings critical program management skills and technical expertise that will directly contribute to the IT sector's strategic growth objectives," said David Zolet, president of Northrop Grumman IT's Commercial, State and Local group. As vice president and program manager, Abbate is responsible for overall program management and contract deliverables for Northrop Grumman's work on the $500 million New York City wireless engagement. Northrop Grumman was selected in Sept. 2006 by New York City to create the citywide mobile wireless network for public safety personnel and other city agencies. Abbate will also be responsible for leading the company's state and local wireless strategy.
Abbate was most recently director and deputy integrated product team leader for electronic support and attack systems within Northrop Grumman. Previously, he served in a variety of management positions including program director for the Increased Capability III program (ICAP-III), where he was responsible for the development and successful fleet deployment of the next generation electronic warfare system for the EA-6B electronic attack tactical aircraft.
Abbate earned a bachelor's degree from the New York Institute of Technology, N.Y., and a master's degree from Long Island University, N.Y.
McVicar is responsible for overall program management for the partnership between Northrop Grumman and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA). This strategic, $2 billion partnership is transforming the state government's IT infrastructure and providing expertise and resources to support improved delivery of government services. McVicar oversees a workforce of 1,400 professionals in the delivery of new facilities, networks, and computing systems that will transform IT service delivery to more than 80 state agencies.
McVicar has more than 25 years of experience in leading organizations in the delivery of IT solutions and services in the U.S. and U.K. In a prior assignment, he served as executive program manager of Northrop Grumman's prime contract to develop and implement the Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System (DIMHRS). When deployed to all military services, DIMHRS will serve more than two million active duty, reserve and National Guard service members, making it the largest integrated payroll and personnel system ever built. McVicar also served as program manager for the modernization of the National Weather Service information infrastructure.
McVicar earned bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., and a master's degree in business administration from George Mason University, Fairfax, Va.
In his new role, Sturms is responsible for the company's IT managed services accounts, which include infrastructure and outsourcing services and solutions for federal, commercial, state and local customers, and internal IT infrastructure support to Northrop Grumman.
During Sturms' 24-year career with Northrop Grumman, he has managed large, fixed-price, international system integration programs and strategic business development opportunities in three of the company's business sectors as well as the corporate office. Most recently he managed new business activities for the company's Technical Services sector. Prior to that, Sturms was the director of captures for Northrop Grumman's corporate business development office. He also served as director of operations for the company's Kinetic Energy Interceptor program within the Mission Systems sector.
Sturms earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Richmond, Va., and a master's degree in business administration from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va.
