IXONOS LAUNCHES LINUX-BASED OPEN SOURCE PLATFORM FOR SMARTPHONES AND MOBILE COMPUTERS

Ixonos Plc Press Release 11 February 2008

IXONOS LAUNCHES LINUX-BASED OPEN SOURCE PLATFORM FOR SMARTPHONES AND MOBILE
COMPUTERS

Ixonos has developed a software platform for the development of smartphones and
mobile computers. The platform is based on Linux operating system and open
source tools and components. The software platform comprises a large number of
software and tools for product development. The basic functions integrated into
to the platform include, for example, phone features, touch screen and web
browser.

”Ixonos is a world-leading software developer of Symbian-based products. Through
a development project we have gained strong Linux solutions competence in the
passed two years. One of the main aims of the project has been to develop an
intuitive, easy-to-use and easy-to-modify touch-screen user interface for a
device that integrates the functions of a mobile phone and a palmtop computer.
The customizability of the user interface and the services, the
user-friendliness of the devices and the agile software development are becoming
key issues in the product development of devices and services,” says Kari
Liuska, Vice President and Head of Ixonos Business Operations.

The software platform is based on Linux 2.6 kernel and Debian distribution. The
solution supports touch screen and contains user interface software, phone
functions, calendar, web browser and email, as well as a reference device for
development and test use.

”Open source and Linux-based solutions offer a clear and reliable platform for
mobile device product development. The convergence of open source software and
development environments facilitates that the tools used in software development
can also be utilized to create products, services and features for traditional
web environments, PC hardware and mobile terminals. We continuously implement
demanding customer projects in all these environments,” says Liuska.

Ixonos utilized the experience drawn from the development project in more than
half a dozen customer projects in 2007.

IXONOS AND OPEN SOURCE

Ixonos has chosen open source code as one of the strategic technology platforms
for the production of services covering the entire life cycle of software. The
communal character of open source code boosts the number of potential developers
of devices, subscriber connections and services, and thus speeds up the
development and adoption of new features. By utilizing open source code we can
offer the customers more efficient tools for managing the risks of product
development and improving competitiveness, as well as cost-efficient flexibility
for changing business needs. Acting in the Open Source development community is
for Ixonos part of the company's strategic skills development, and provides a
communication channel to communities developing open source code and to
customers utilizing it.
