Kansas City Office Building Shrinks Carbon Footprint

KANSAS CITY, MO--(Marketwire - March 17, 2008) - City Center Square, a luxury high-rise office building located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, is one of 200 buildings owned by Time Equities Inc. participating in an environmental audit this year. Acting ahead of the curve, City Center Square's management, Grubb and Ellis | The Winbury Group, initiated a number of improvements for the building long before the audit, including a new chiller and energy saving lighting enhancement.

Alice Cook, director of sustainability for Time Equities Inc., said that City Center Square is well on its way to reducing its overall energy consumption. "The high-rise is taking proactive steps, including replacing all of the lighting in the building with compact fluorescent bulbs, transitioning to green cleaning products, introducing a recycling program and utilizing window film to reduce solar heat gain," said Cook. "Eighty percent of energy use is behavioral, while 20 percent is from technology."

According to Janet Ziegler, vice president of finance and administration for the Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association, tenants are embracing City Center Squares' lead on implementing environmental measures. "We've taken steps to adapt behaviors as well as procedures. Styrofoam cups have been eliminated, replaced with washable cups. We are also focusing many of our mailing efforts online which saves the CVA over $60,000 annually in paper and postage," said Ziegler. "City Center Square is a good partner for us in new recycling programs, using low waste paper products and sensor light initiatives. We are all lucky to be working in a building that recognizes the importance of taking environmental measures seriously."
