Suicidal Man Subdued With TASER Device

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 17, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- TASER International, Inc. (Nasdaq:TASR), a market leader in advanced electronic control devices, released the following news alert:

According to an article in the March 13, 2008 edition of the Morgan Hill Times, Morgan Hill, CA, a 24-year-old man reportedly had an argument with his mother and then assaulted her before leaving their apartment. Police approached him as he was lying on the railroad tracks near his home threatening to commit suicide.

He went out into the roadway and was yelling at passing vehicles to kill him. Police were told he had been taking medications for mental issues, but had stopped taking them.

"We were not only concerned for his safety but also for the safety of everyone around him at that point," said Morgan Hill police Commander David Swing.

He was acting aggressively toward the first officer to arrive and refused to comply with the officer's commands. The officer hit him with a baton, but it had no effect on him and he continued to refuse to comply.

When a second officer arrived, one of the officers used his TASER(r) Electronic Control Device (ECD) on the man and he was quickly taken into custody, cleared by paramedics and taken for mental evaluation.

"This is another example of the benefits of that type of weapon," Commander Swing said. "This is the second time a TASER has been used recently when an individual could have been injured or injured an officer. If two officers have to subdue someone without the TASER, they could cause serious injury to that person or themselves. The TASER is an important tool in these kinds of situations."
