Fortum's energy simulator activates consumers

Satama, a part of Trainers' House Group, has developed an energy simulator for
Fortum's Swedish website, which allows consumers to easily monitor their energy
and electricity consumption and gives them useful tips on how to cut
consumption and look after the environment.

The energy simulator is an advanced, versatile interactive service where
consumers enter key data relating to their electricity and energy consumption,
such as the size and location of their house and the appliances that they have
in it. The visually entertaining kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms feature
some of the most popular household appliances and home entertainment equipment
and demonstrate the effects that cutting the use of these devices can have on
energy consumption, costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

“We would like to support our customers going from words to action and lower
energy consumption, costs and reduce impact on climate change. Sustainability,
which includes energy efficiency, is one cornerstone in Fortum and the
simulator is an excellent tool to visualise energy efficiency possibilities at
home” says Fredrik Sköld, at Fortum Sweden”

“Our solution to Fortum's challenge was the energy simulator that helps
consumers to assess their energy consumption and to monitor the effects of
lower consumption on not just their energy bills but also the environment,”
says Jonas Ehrling, Project Manager at Satama Sweden.

Because of the complexity of the production work of energy simulator, the
project proved to be a learning process for both Fortum and Satama; the use of
several independent systems caused unanticipated technical challenges. The
service was launched in December 2007 as a free service available to anyone
wanting to know more about energy and energy consumption. Since the launch, the
energy simulator has met with great enthusiasm.
