The power situation in Norway as of 9 April 2008

Lysaker, 9 April 2008

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Mild weather and lower consumption

The total Norwegian power consumption fell by 260 GWh from week 13 to 14. Milder weather with temperatures of 2 to 2.5 degrees above normal is the main reason of the decrease. The Norwegian consumption is 40.2 TWh so far this year. That is 1.1 TWh more than in the same period last year.

The elspot price in Southern-Norway was 19.7 øre/kWh last week. That is a decrease of 1 øre compared to the week before. Lower demand due to milder weather combined with the continuation of the limited export capacity out of Southern-Norway explains the price decrease. In the other Nordic areas there was a rise in power prices and the price difference with respect to Southern-Norway increased from week 13 to 14. In Middle- and Northern-Norway the elspot price was 30.7 øre/kWh.

The Norwegian reservoir level at the end of week 14 was 42.5 percent. During the week the reservoir level dropped by 2.5 percentage points. The reservoir level is now 4.8 percentage points over the median level. Swedish reservoir levels are now 30.4 percent, after a 2.7 percentage point drop from the week before.
