The power situation in Norway as of 16 April 2008

Lysaker, 30 April 2008
Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Limited export capacity from southern Norway - but still Norwegian net exports
There capacities on the cables connecting South-Norway to Sweden and Denmark are still halved. This has dampened the Norwegian exports, and contributed to low electricity prices in southern Norway. In week 15, the average wholesale price was 21.1 øre/kWh in the South of Norway. Prices in Mid- and Northern Norway were 15.6 øre higher.

There have been Norwegian net exports in every week this year. The hydro power production has been high as a consequence of a high reservoir level at the start of 2008, and 4.2 TWh more inflow than normal to the reservoirs so far this year. At the same time, there is more snow than usual in the mountains; witch will raise inflow levels during the melting season. In addition, it has been a warm winter, and this has dampened the demand for electricity. Temperatures had been above normal levels in almost every week in the whole of Norway in 2008. There have been 2.9 TWh total net Norwegian exports this year. This is the highest level for this period since 2005.

The Norwegian reservoir level at the end of week 14 was 39.8 percent. During the week the reservoir level dropped by 2.7 percentage points. The reservoir level is now 3.7 percentage points over the median level.
