10th Patent Awarded to VirtualScopics

Patent Enables Elimination of Metal Artifacts During CT Imaging

ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 21, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- VirtualScopics, Inc. (Nasdaq:VSCP), a leading developer of image-based biomarker solutions for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries, today announced it has received a notice of allowance for its 10th patent titled "System and Method for Reducing or Eliminating Streak Artifacts and Illumination Inhomogeneity in CT Imaging."

VirtualScopics, Inc.'s chief scientific officer Dr. Ed Ashton stated, "The applications of the technology underlying this patent are extremely useful during CT scans of patients who have undergone hip replacement surgery or spinal fusion." He continued, "Often in CT images it is difficult to identify anatomical structures due to the interference that is created by metal prosthetics. This patent enables us to remove the artifacts created by these devices to allow us to accurately and precisely measure the surrounding tissues."

The company also announced the issuance of the previously awarded patent "Semi-Automated Measurement of Anatomical Structures Using Statistical and Morphological Priors." Dr. Ashton further stated, "We are extremely pleased with the robustness of our patent portfolio. These proprietary tools are the basis for the services and information we provide our customers that enable them to make better and quicker decisions on the efficacy of their compounds."
