Telvent Leads the European Union's Border Management Project

MADRID, Spain, April 22, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Telvent (Nasdaq:TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today that the European Commission awarded the Company the contract for the first phase of the pilot project for the Integrated Border Management System, which is part of the European Union's VII Framework Program. Telvent will lead the European consortium responsible for executing the project, aimed to define the strategy for the European Union's border management system.

In the first phase of the project, known as Globe, Telvent will elaborate, along with other 13 European companies that constitute the consortium, the technological guidelines and procedures for different European organizations and select the leaders responsible for European border management. These guidelines will focus on improving border management and fight against illegal immigration from all sources. Moreover, all progress made will be analyzed, at the same time that work is carried out directly with European border end-users or managers, to study their needs, and thus recommend new lines of technological development in response to said requirements.

According to Manuel Sanchez, Telvent's President and Chief Executive Officer, "The project is in response to one of the biggest priorities of our society: the increase of security at our borders. This goal is only attainable through the use of IT, which will play a more and more important role in security."

The results obtained in the first phase of the project will be put into practice in the second phase via demonstration of a complete and integrated system for European Union border management. This demonstration, scheduled for 2009, includes both regulated and non-regulated borders, countries of origin and illegal immigration to the Member States. These two phases will conclude with the construction of the European Border System.

Telvent's leadership in the Globe's project reaffirms its commitment to technology for security. Telvent will drive this project from its facilities at The National Institute of Communication Technologies (INTECO), in Leon (Spain), along with other Telvent-developed initiatives in support of a "common secure space". Telvent works towards security in partnership with other international bodies and entities and is a member of the Committee of the European Organization for Security (EOS).
