Police Use TASER Device to Free Family Held Hostage by Man With a Samurai Sword

According to a report in the April 23, 2008 edition of the Burton Mail from Burton on Trent in the United Kingdom, police used a TASER(r) Electronic Control Device to temporarily disable a 28-year-old man who held a terrified family hostage with a Samurai sword.

More than a dozen specially-trained officers stormed the house at around midnight and stopped the offender with an electronic stun gun after he refused to give himself up. Residents described seeing laser sights from the automatic weapons trained on the man's chest as he was cuffed and marched from the house into an awaiting ambulance. The suspect was then taken to the local hospital where his wounds were treated before he was transported to Burton Police Station.
