ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., May 1, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- In support of the annual nationwide student outreach program, Discover Engineering (Discover "E"), Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) sent a total of 40 engineering staff members into 20 different Chicago-area schools this spring to give students a better understanding of the contribution engineers make to society.
Discover "E" is an educational initiative aimed at exposing elementary, middle and high school students to engineering in an effort to cultivate an interest in math and science-related careers by bringing engineers into area classrooms. Northrop Grumman employee volunteers spend their day demonstrating to students how math and science skills are applied to careers in engineering through shared experiences, presentations and hands-on science activities.
In addition to time spent with the school children in each classroom, Northrop Grumman is donating $750 to each participating school to support their science and math curricula.

"Our goal is to increase student interest in science, math and technology and demonstrate how these subjects are applied in the real world."
The program is part of Northrop Grumman's sponsorship of National Engineers Week 2008. Engineers Week is a coalition of engineering, educational and cultural societies, corporations and government agencies dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers' positive contributions to the nation's quality of life.
