SKY Computers Launches LightningBolt, the Next Generation of Embedded Computers

Sets Standard for Scalability, Reliability and Performance for Applications Including Radar, SIGINT, Explosive Detection and C4ISR

CHELMSFORD, Mass., May 13, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- SKY Computers, Inc., a leading supplier of embedded high performance computer systems, today announced LightningBolt(tm), the next generation embedded computer that delivers unprecedented levels of scalability, reliability and price/performance for demanding applications.

Field-tested packaging and connector technologies make the 6U LightningBolt VME boards deployment-ready for harsh environments. LightningBolt is aggressively priced below currently available high-performance embedded computers.

The LightningBolt embedded computer system will be available for shipment in the third quarter of 2008. Pricing for LightningBolt starts in the low $20K range with quantity discounts available.

The new LightningBolt family of embedded computers is fully compatible with SKY's previous SKYbolt(r) family of products. Customers can easily upgrade to the new LightningBolt family without re-writing their applications.

"SKY Computers is taking the lead in addressing the needs of today's embedded computer buyer, including systems that meet demanding requirements such as radar, SIGINT, explosive detection and C4ISR," said David Bushee, director of OEM sales and services, SKY Computers. "Adding LightningBolt to the SKY Computers family raises the bar to a new level of performance and reliability."

LightningBolt uses the 1.2 GHz Power PC MPC 7448 microprocessor and the ANSI/VITA standard SKYchannel interconnect fabric, delivering optimal computing and I/O performance. The advanced SKYvec(r) software development environment provides tools to simplify complex multiprocessor programming. The 6U LightningBolt is configured with one compute module of four MPC7448s and one optional I/O module.

LightningBolt Overview

The 6U LightningBolt provides all the resources required to obtain optimal performance from SKY's Computer and I/O modules.

Features and specifications:

 * Best price/performance of any high-performance embedded computer:
   Other features include:
   * 38.4 GFLOPS per 6U VME slot
   * Fast-boot time of less than 10 seconds for start up and
     initialization
 * Proven, reliable, scalable systems: for high speed processing,
   memory and communication:
   * Up to 64 processors/system
   * Up to 2 GB SDRAM per 6U module
 * Integrated lifecycle support: proven history of software
   portability
   * SKY continues its compatibility record of product upgrades and
     provides ability to migrate to standards-based, open systems.
 * Deployment ready: the LightningBolt Compute Module provides
   unsurpassed reliability for deployable environments. LightningBolt
   boards provide 2.5x the processing power, without throwing off any
   more heat than previous generations of SKYbolt.

Advanced SKYvec(r) development tools simplify code development for large multiprocessor systems by automating many of the processes which otherwise would burden the systems programmer. SKYvec eliminates the need for costly and time consuming software migration. New applications development time can be reduced 30-50 percent by using the standard SKYvec API.
