Northrop Grumman Announces Sponsorship of St. Mary's County Public Schools STEM Foundation

HOLLYWOOD, Md., May 28, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) today announced a $10,000 sponsorship of the St. Mary's County Public Schools Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) Foundation.

The funds will support STEM Academy programs with participation by more than 250 students, elementary through high school, as well as numerous other students across the school system who benefit from STEM instruction in extended day programs and summer camps.

STEM emphasizes the core areas of mathematics and science with an infusion of technology and engineering. Students with advanced skills and interests in these areas of study receive instruction in state-of-the-art classrooms, research laboratories and e-learning labs.

"As a corporation recognized for technological innovation, achievement and commitment to the communities where its employees live and work, Northrop Grumman is proud to support the St. Mary's County Public Schools STEM Foundation," said Scott Stewart, Northrop Grumman corporate lead executive in Patuxent River, MD. "Initiatives like this are just one more way Northrop Grumman is helping the local school system and community provide young people with the opportunity to enhance their skills as they prepare to be the leaders of tomorrow."

With almost 300 employees in the area, Northrop Grumman is an active part of the community, and recently hosted STEM students at its Mobile Maritime Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Center in Hollywood, Md. During the visit to the MMISRC, students received hands-on instruction from company engineers on applying GPS technology to navigation solutions, computer-based mapping tools, and fundamentals of celestial navigation. Earlier in the year, Northrop Grumman participated in a STEM open house, aimed at generating interest in the STEM Academy with prospective students and their parents.

"The tremendous success of our STEM program has been greatly impacted by the sponsorship of companies such as Northrop Grumman Corporation," said Dr. Michael Martirano, superintendent of St. Mary's County Public Schools. "We are exceedingly grateful for Northrop Grumman's generosity, both through financial support and through opportunities for students to access state-of-the-art technologies such as the Mobile Maritime Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Center."
