About the Author

Gerhard Freund was born in 1926 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany where he grew up. From age sixteen to nineteen, he was a soldier in World War II. After discharge from POW camp he studied medicine and graduated from the Medical School of the Goethe University in Frankfurt. He completed an internship in Ottawa, Canada, three years of residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago where he married. Following two years of fellowship at McGill University in Montreal, the author returned to Chicago to practice medicine. He then joined the faculty of the University of Florida College of Medicine. Freund is a Professor Emeritus of the College of Medicine where he has been practicing, teaching and conducting research since 1963. He is a board-certified internist and Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
