The power situation in Norway as of 30 July 2008

Lysaker, 30 July 2008

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

High Norwegian power production and exports this year
So far this year the Norwegian power production amounts to 81.8 TWh. This is 5.7 TWh more than last year and the highest level for this period since 2000. The total electricity consumption has been 2.2 TWh higher than last years level, even with somewhat warmer weather. When adjusting for temperatures, the level of consumption is 2.7 TWh higher than in 2007.

The increased power production is closely related to unusual high inflows to the Norwegian hydro plants. In addition, there was more water than normal in the reservoirs at the beginning of the year. The total inflow this year is 87 TWh, which is 11 TWh more than in the same period of last year.

The level of exports is also at its highest since 2000. Norwegian net exports amounts to 7.4 TWh so far this year. The NorNed-cable connecting the south of Norway and Holland has been operational since May, and has contributed with a total of 1.5 TWh export. Outages on cables to Sweden and Denmark has reduced exports from South-Norway, and been one factor for lower prices in the area.
