Infortrend Shows High Performance Storage Can be 'Green'

Efficient Use of RAID Resources Brings Energy and Cost Savings

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 5, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Networked storage expert Infortrend(r) poses its own views on how to reduce power consumption and deliver 'green' technology to the RAID storage market. With the hyper growth of data storage demands, simply exchanging different boxes in a data center is not the only -- or even the best -- way to make storage management more environmentally friendly. Product efficiency is the invisible, yet key, factor, as poor efficiency usually leads to higher power usage. Improve the total efficiency of a storage infrastructure and suddenly the data center will become greener and the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) more appealing. This is the main idea behind the company's latest white paper, "Increasing the Efficiency of Your RAID Storage to Make it Greener," which is available to download at www.infortrend.com.

In addition to the topics covered in Infortrend's 'green' technical brief, below are some additional suggestions to make data storage more efficient:

 * Employ a method to easily manage RAID subsystems: SANWatch(r),
Infortrend's proprietary storage management software suite, has a
user-friendly, central management interface to help IT managers
monitor and manage EonStor arrays. Snapshot backup features are
currently available and other central management tools will be
   introduced in the near future.
 * Consider higher performing RAID systems to save power. If a certain
model RAID system performs twice as fast as another array, then the
faster system can replace two slower subsystems. By consuming less
power and generating less heat than using two slower systems, the
faster model becomes the best and greener solution.
 * Conserve rack space and energy: The 1U EonStor B12 series uses 2.5-
inch hard drives and expends approximately 20 percent less power
than standard RAID systems using 3.5-inch drives. This product is
ideal for companies that manage a high volume of data transactions,
such as banking, telecommunications, and insurance.
 * Use virtualization software: This method helps reduce power
consumption and better utilize facilities by sharing resources
across different operating systems. As a VMware Technology
Alliance Partner, Infortrend recently announced compatibility
   between EonStor Fibre Channel host systems and VMware 3.0;
certification for other products is currently underway.

"We can all do more in our personal and business lives to be more eco-friendly -- from recycling, turning off unneeded lights and taking the stairs instead of the elevator, to biking, using mass transportation, or carpooling to work where possible," said Thomas Kao, director of global product marketing and planning at Infortrend Technology Inc. "Integrating storage under a comprehensive plan is very important in today's IT world. Infortrend provides a wide range of RAID subsystems and we advise our customers to carefully consider their projected needs so they can buy the EonStor system that will meet and grow with their demand over the next few years. By calculating their efficiency, capacity, performance, power, and space requirements, customers can maximize their data storage efficiency."
