NASDAQ Announces End-of-Month Open Short Interest Positions in NASDAQ Stocks as of Settlement Date July 31, 2008


NEW YORK, Aug. 11, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- At the end of the settlement date of July 31, 2008, short interest in 2,634 NASDAQ Global Market(sm) securities totaled 10,560,730,163 shares compared with 10,977,290,029 shares in 2,632 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of July 15, 2008. The end-of-July short interest represents 4.39 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 4.56 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 530 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 202,675,409 shares at the end of the settlement date of July 31, 2008, compared with 203,924,618 shares in 511 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 6.52 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 4.02.

In summary, short interest in all 3,164 NASDAQ(r) securities totaled 10,763,405,572 shares at the end of the July 31, 2008 settlement date, compared with 3,143 issues and 11,181,214,647 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.42 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 4.55 days for the previous reporting period.
