The power situation in Norway as of 20 August 2008

Lysaker, 20 August 2008

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Increased prices in Norway
The average spot price increased in all Norwegian elspot areas from week 32 to week 33. The increase was highest in Middle Norway, where the price rose 5 øre to 51 øre/kWh. In Southern and Northern Norway the price increased by 1 and 3 øre to 35 and 44 øre/kWh respectively. The price was still higher in Sweden and Finland, with an increase of 4 øre to 52 øre/kWh.

Increased power demand in Sweden contributed to the price increase in Middle and Northern Norway. The export capacity from Middle Norway to Sweden was used to the maximum in most hours in the beginning of week 33. At that time the price was higher in Sweden than in Middle Norway.

The prices were more concurrent at the end of the week. The Northern Norway price was lower due to maximum use of the export capacities almost all week. High inflow and reduced export capacities have had a tempering effect on the Southern Norway power price.
