Summer is Still Sizzling

Take Care of Your Vehicle

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 29, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AutoZone (NYSE:AZO) -- As summer turns into fall, there are a few more hot days left. Summer's scorching temperatures can place a huge strain on any vehicle. It is a good idea to protect your investment by assessing any damage possibly caused during the hot summer months. AutoZone offers a few suggestions that can help keep your car looking and running its best.

Check your battery

Many people associate cold weather with battery failure, but summer heat is the biggest factor in a shortened battery life. After a summer of heat, you should check your battery, especially if it is 3-5 years old. If you find corrosion on your battery, clean it with a mixture of baking soda and water, and put on a set of battery washers.

Check your radiator hoses

Extreme heat can cause the rubber compounds within your radiator hoses to lose their flexibility, so you should keep an eye out for hard, blistered or spongy hoses. Make sure all hose clamps are tight, and check for cracks or corrosion. If any of these conditions are present, replace the hoses immediately.

Inspect your fan belts

If your fan belts are loose or worn, your car can overheat. Check to make sure there is no damage to your fan belts due to excessive temperatures under the hood. Replace your belts if necessary.

Inspect your vehicle's interior

The sun can cause your seats to rot and fade. It can also draw moisture from your leather or vinyl causing fading and cracking. If you didn't protect your car during the hot summer days, your local AutoZone can direct you to products to beautify and protect your car's interior.

Check out your paint

Unprotected exposure to sunlight can fade the paint on your car's exterior. The surface can also become rough, which can eventually lead to rusting. If the energy from sunlight has caused damage to your car, you can avoid further damage by thoroughly cleaning the finish and protecting it with a good non-abrasive car wax.
