Experience This Civil War Epic -- New Book Follows the Story of a Young Man Who Witnesses the End of the Old South

LITHIA SPRINGS, Ga., Sept. 5, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As history has proven, the Civil War marked the end of the Old South, an era best remembered for its prosperity, gracious living and slavery. With the release of his new book Fallow Are the Fields, author Steven D. Ayres invites readers on a memorable journey to the past through his dramatic storytelling and reflection of a forgotten civilization.

Set in the mid-1800s, Fallow Are the Fields follows the exploits of a young man named Steven Jett. He lives with a large family on a farm near Salt Springs, Georgia. Early on, the family gets worried over the effects of the war on their lives as social unrest gradually spreads around them. When the conflict escalates, Steven finds himself struggling hard to survive and his family separated. Worse, their society begins to vanish as killing and destruction enters the state. Will Steven be able to survive, and if so, will he still have a family left? Read the book to find out.

Ultimately, this epic captures the transition in the South caused by the war and chronicles the eventual end of a lively culture. For more information, please visit Xlibris.com.

About the Author

Steven D. Ayres, known as "Steve" to his many friends, has lived most of his life in the country around Salt Springs, Georgia. Now Lithia Springs, and once known to the Indians as Deer Lick, it has been the home of the author for over half a century now. Born in Atlanta, at the age of five, his family moved to the old farm just three miles west of Lithia Springs where much of this story takes place. The surrounding area is rich in history, especially about the Civil War, including the ante-bellum house in which the author was reared. As a boy he played in the creeks and fields, climbed Kennesaw Mountain, and went horseback riding and camping at Factory Shoals and the ruins of Manchester Mill. The author and his wife, Beth, still live on the family farm, just three miles west of Lithia Springs, Georgia.
