Associated Estates Realty Corporation Supports Troops Serving Overseas in Observation of September 11 as a National Day of Service

CLEVELAND, Sept. 10, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Associated Estates Realty Corporation (NYSE:AEC), (Nasdaq:AEC) announced today that, through its community involvement program, AECares, and in observation of September 11 as a national day of service, the Company will provide support to a platoon of troops -- the 6th Battalion, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division -- currently deployed to Afghanistan.

The AECares program was implemented in 2001 to support the Company's commitment to communities where AEC does business. Through this program and the goodwill of its employees, AEC has been able to generously contribute thousands of dollars and volunteer hours to charitable programs each year.

"This commitment to our communities is another example of our leadership in the markets where we do business," said Kimberly Kanary, vice president of corporate communications. "Our employees play an important role as ambassadors in their own neighborhoods, contributing countless hours to matters that are meaningful to their communities," she continued.

On September 11, the Company will kick-off an event to collect supplies and raise funds for our troops serving overseas, in observation of this national day of voluntary service, charity and good deeds. September 11 was designated as such by myGoodDeed Inc., a non-profit organization created by survivors, family members and volunteers from 9/11.

"It's important that we remember the events of September 11, 2001. We're proud to honor the men and women who have served -- and continue to serve our country -- both at home and abroad," Kanary added.

AEC will be raising funds and collecting items ranging from clothing and hygiene supplies to snacks and CDs/DVDs for our troops at each of its 55+ offices and apartment communities beginning on September 11 and concluding October 6, 2008.
