Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Receives $1.8 Million Contract for First Over-the-Horizon Microwave System Designed for Floating Oil Platform Application

MELVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 29, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq:CMTL) announced today that its Orlando, Florida-based subsidiary, Comtech Systems, Inc., received a $1.8 million contract from a major international oil company to install the first digital over-the-horizon microwave communications system for use on a deep water, semi-submersible floating oil platform.

The design is a first for troposcatter communications, in that, it requires a stabilized antenna system on the offshore floating platform to remain locked to a fixed antenna at a shore location. The system is designed to operate in calm and rough waters while maintaining a high quality connection between the oil platform and the land-based communications center. Comtech was selected for this project based on its innovative antenna stabilization design, its long history as a world leader in troposcatter equipment and systems, and its high data rate, field proven troposcatter digital modem. The system has a data rate capability of up to 20 megabits per second (20Mbps), and will be used to carry both digital voice and data traffic. The system will use Comtech Systems adaptive digital modem, troposcatter radio system and high power amplifiers, as well as antennas.

In commenting on this award, Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp., said, "We are proud of this technological breakthrough that allowed us to address an important customer requirement that further demonstrates our leadership in the over-the-horizon microwave communications industry."
