A Quaker At War -- New Historical Book Features a Quaker Who Joined the Army During the Civil War

LOCK HAVEN, Pa., Sept. 30, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Civil War was a decisive moment in American history - if not, for the entire world. Depending on which side won, the future course of humanity might have taken a different path. A new book just released recounts the dilemma of a Quaker during this momentous period, who was torn between his religion and convictions.

A Quaker Soldier In The Civil War is a riveting in-depth narrative about a young soldier from Clearfield, PA who enlisted in the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1862. Though a Quaker who was committed to pacifism, John F. Irwin also deeply opposed slavery and was hence committed to abolitionism. His abolitionism won out, and he served in the Army of the Potomac until the end in 1865.

The 149th PVI regiment fought in all the major battles of the Army of the Potomac, battles such as Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor and the siege of Richmond-Petersburg. Toward the end, they were sent to Elmira, NY to oversee the Rebel prison camp there and escort new draftees to their assignments. John F. Irwin was eventually mustered out and discharged in July 1865.

This is truly a remarkable and well-researched account of the Civil War! Get a copy now!
