Has Success Cost This Athlete His Soul? -- New Book Tells the Story of a Hockey Player Whose Life Outside of Sport Begins to Unravel and Spill Onto the Ice

CLOVIS, Calif., Oct. 16, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Although many of us fear failure, sometimes it is success that can be most costly. One man on the verge of superstardom loses touch with himself and his family in the glare of the professional hockey world. This is the engaging story about the measure of man all set to begin with the release of Shift: A Novel, authored by Matt Brown.

Inspired by the stories of the many Olympians, athletes, coaches and other talents the author has worked with, Shift follows the struggles of Kevin Wilkins, whose life outside of hockey is deteriorating despite his on-ice success. He is challenged to overcome poor decisions, insecurities, and his greatest fears. But the incentive is substantial: true intimacy, a clear mind and conscience, comfort in his own skin, and the ability to surrender to and savor the moment he is in. With the help of an ailing old friend, he resets his focus, attempting to restore the most important relationships in his life -- including the one with himself. Can Wilkins recover the things dearest to him? Read the book to find out.
