no 19/08 Nord Pool launches power price index NPN 365T

(Lysaker, 17 October 2008) Today Nord Pool ASA launches a forward price index for Nordic power, NPN 365™. The price index represents the price of power for a period lasting 365 days, based on Nord Pool ASA's derivatives contracts.
The price index is calculated daily, based on an average of closing prices of derivative contracts on Nord Pool, daily spot prices and the historical relationship between spot prices and financial market prices. The NPN 365™ index allows people to follow daily price changes in the market for future power and to compare current prices to historical trends. The index reflects the market's expectation of the power price from the current date through the coming year. The NPN365™ index will be quoted in € per MWh.

Torger Lien, CEO of Nord Pool ASA says:
“This will give stakeholders of the Nordic power market a simple tool for reviewing the average future power price. The index will make it easier to compare the spot price with the development of the forward prices. Consumers can also use it as the best estimate for the next year's future average power price.”

The NPN 365™ index will be a product for informational purposes only. However, Nord Pool's ambition is to launch additional price indexes and tradable indexes both for the power and carbon market later.

“In order to increase the transparency of the markets, such indexes will create an easier understanding of price movements and how prices vary during the year,” Lien comments.
