Tom Parker was not fond of cats. For him, they were good for nothing but looking cute. He liked dogs better so he can have a hunting companion. His daughter Rosie, however, was dead set on having a cat and nothing could sway her. They compromised and got a gray kitten she named "Smoky," except she can only say "Moky." Tom also got a new hound dog, Bob, who surprisingly got along well with Smoky. Smoky's favorite spot was at the top of the stairs where she can see everyone who entered the house. In this position, Tom, Rita and Rosie can see her ears at the top of the stairs when they take a few steps. In time, Tom got used to the new addition but he still loved his dog better.
One day, Smoky accidentally got out of the house and was lost. Rosie was distraught and Tom used Bob to track Smoky's whereabouts. When they found her, she was terribly injured and on the brink of death. It would require major surgery and a lot of money -- money which they didn't have -- to make Smoky well. For the last fifteen years, he wrote a humorous article for the newsletter they printed. The author has been married for thirty-eight years to Catherine (Kitty) and they have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and 2 grandchildren with another on the way.
