International Education Week is a joint initiative between the Department of State and the Department of Education to promote programs such as Global Kids that prepare Americans to live and work in a global environment and encourage and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States. International Education Week was first held in 2000 and today, over 100 countries celebrate it world wide.

Global Kids aims to educate and inspire the urban youth in New York City metropolitan area to become successful students as well as global and community leaders by engaging in socially dynamic and content-rich learning experiences. Through its leadership development and academic enrichment programs, Global Kids educates youth about critical international and domestic issues and promotes their engagement in civic life and the democratic process. Over ninety percent of the high school seniors who participate in Global Kids' leadership program graduate from high school.
