Bank of Hampton Roads Announces 'Crush Hunger' Food Drive


NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 24, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Bank of Hampton Roads, a subsidiary of Hampton Roads Bankshares (Nasdaq:HMPR), is very proud to announce that from December 1st through 18th, it will hold a CRUSH HUNGER Food Drive to benefit the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Donations of non-perishable food items donations will be accepted at all eighteen Bank of Hampton Roads locations.

On Saturday, December 6th, Monster Jam World Finalist "Stone Crusher" will be on hand to help with the event. The monster truck will be on display at the Bank's new Edinburgh Office located at 204 Carmichael Way in Chesapeake. Make a food or monetary donation to the Foodbank and have your picture taken FREE with "Stone Crusher." With each dollar received, the Foodbank can distribute up to $8.00 worth of groceries to neighbors in need.

Bank of Hampton Roads is a loyal supporter of the Foodbank donating all of the proceeds from its Cash Cow coin counters to the organization's Kids Cafe; the coin counters are located at the Bank's Deep Creek, Great Bridge and Great Neck offices. The Bank also sells piggy banks to support the Foodbank - priced at only $5.00, they make perfect stocking stuffers.

In 2007, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia fed 250,000 hungry people - 32% were children, 24% were senior citizens, and 42% were working people that did not make enough to provide food for their families. These numbers will likely increase for 2008. The Foodbank is a warehouse or "bank" where recovered and contributed food is collected, sorted and distributed to more than 500 agencies including subsidized day care centers, church pantries, shelters, senior living centers, and area Kids Cafes which then disburse or prepare and serve the food to those in need.
