NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As part of an ongoing commitment to corporate responsibility, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP is embracing the holiday spirit with a nationwide effort to give back to communities and help people in need. In lieu of organized holiday parties, PwC is donating $1.5 million to charitable organizations in more than 60 communities throughout the United States. The financial contribution is accompanied by a significant effort that encourages the firm's 30,000 partners and staff to volunteer time to charitable causes during the holiday season.

PwC recently granted all U.S. employees 10 additional hours of paid time off to volunteer for their personal causes and charities in the community.

"PricewaterhouseCoopers' decision to make a substantial charitable donation during this very difficult economic time is simply the right thing to do," says Dennis Nally, U.S. chairman and senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers. "Our partners and staff are sensitive to the very real challenges many people all over the country are currently facing. We hope that our financial support and volunteerism will have a positive impact on the lives of American families, particularly during the holiday season."

PwC's decision to forego holiday parties was applauded by firm employees, who sent more than 200 unsolicited emails supporting the idea to Nally following the internal announcement.

Giving time, in addition to money, ensures that PwC makes a positive and sustainable impact on communities and people in need. PwC has a long history of philanthropic support for local, national and international charitable organizations. In fiscal year 2008, PwC donated $30 million and its partners and staff contributed 96,000 hours of volunteer time for community causes.
