Third Hand Smoke Recognized as Health Hazard

Nymox's TobacAlert(tm) Measures Exposure to Third Hand Smoke

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J., Jan. 8, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation (Nasdaq:NYMX) offers TobacAlert(tm), a convenient on-the-spot tool to measure exposure to tobacco products including second hand smoke, and third hand smoke. Third hand smoke is a distinct health hazard, and refers to tobacco smoke contamination that remains after the cigarette has been extinguished. Third hand smoke lingers in rooms and in cars and on materials such as hair, clothing, carpets, beds, sofas and curtains.

A new study from researchers at Harvard (Pediatrics 2009; 123: e74-e79) showed that more than half the smokers who were studied were unaware of the harmful nature of third hand smoke. Experts currently agree that any level of tobacco exposure carries risk. Babies and children in particular have much greater exposure and risk than adults, because infants ingest more materials from floors and furniture, and they breathe more rapidly. Furthermore, compared to an adult in the same room, the infant dose of second hand and third hand smoke on a weight basis is much higher due to the infant's smaller size.

TobacAlert(tm) employs Nymox's proprietary technology to measure levels of cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine widely used to determine tobacco product use and second-hand smoke exposure. The product requires no instruments for its use and provides an on-site visual read-out of the level of tobacco use or exposure within minutes.
