The Struggle for Survival At No Lower Place -- New Book Tells the Compelling True Account of Life in the Cotton Fields At the Height of the Depression

COLLINSVILLE, Ill., Jan. 13, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- For those born and bred in modern times, it is hard to imagine how difficult life was in the cotton fields of Southeast Missouri in the 1930's and 1940's. Author Paul Self shares how he and his family started at No Lower Place: (for a bird to begin its flight) and how they struggled to survive during the crippling times at the height of the Depression.

No Lower Place is a compelling account that depicts the long, hard hours, working under the blistering heat of the sun and the frigidly frozen, ice covered, cotton fields in a time where there was little work to be had and for meager pay. Migrant farm workers were confined to the less than adequate living quarters provided by farmers and landowners, and were forced to deal with hardships such as floods, famine, and suffering through the pain and frustration. Though seemingly surreal, it reflects the would-be life of someone who lived centuries ago. But in reality, it has not been that long. As unbelievable as some of this may sound, the events that happened in No Lower Place is nevertheless true.

No Lower Place will be featured in BookExpo America Book Exhibit in New York City on May 28-31, 2009.
