Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Obtains a $1.2 Million Satellite Communications Equipment Order

MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 14, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq:CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., received a $1.2 million order for satellite communications equipment that will be utilized to expand a network infrastructure in Asia.

The order specified satellite modems, including our Model DMD20 Universal Satellite Modem, our Model CDM-600 Satellite Modem and CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem. The DMD20 Universal Satellite Modem is highly flexible, supporting IDR, IBS and DVB standards, data rates up to 20 Mbps, a range of forward error correction and modulation schemes, plus L-Band and 70/140 MHz operation. The CDM-600 is an open network satellite modem compliant with IESS-308/309/310/314/315 from 64 kbps through T2 and E2. The architecture is firmware and FPGA-based, and the modem offers exceptional flexibility and performance in a 1RU enclosure.

Released last year, the CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem has been adopted by service providers globally due to its ability to facilitate network upgrades and expansion in regions where satellite capacity is constrained. The CDM-625 builds on Comtech EF Data's legacy of providing bandwidth-efficient satellite modems. It is the first modem to combine Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes with the revolutionary DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier bandwidth compression.

Carrier-in-Carrier is based on Applied Signal Technology's DoubleTalk bandwidth compression technology. DoubleTalk uses "Adaptive Cancellation," a patented technology that allows the transmit and receive carriers of a full-duplex satellite link to be transmitted in the same transponder space. When combined with advanced forward error correction and modulation techniques, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier can deliver unprecedented operating expense savings. In addition, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier can provide capital expenditure savings by allowing a smaller BUC/HPA and/or antenna.

"By providing two brands of satellite modems, our customers can select the best mix of Comtech products for their existing or new networks," said Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.
