Opcon enters into cooperation agreement in Japan regarding Opcon Powerbox Opcon, the energy and environmental technology Group, launched Opcon Powerbox in 2008 to produce electricity from waste heat. Opcon has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Japanese company Miura Co. with around 2,000 employees and which recorded sales of over JPY 70 billion in 2007. The agreement is part of a broad investment for growth. In time, the aim is to conclude a distribution and resale agreement between Opcon and Miura regarding Opcon Powerbox. Miura's principal business focuses on sales of steam and hot water boilers to heavy industry, shipping companies, among others, as well as on service. Miura has an extensive network in Japan consisting of around 300 agents and resellers, who offer customers advice about improving energy efficiency, among other matters. “Japan is a highly interesting market for Opcon Powerbox, not least in light of the country's high electricity prices. Through this cooperation agreement with Miura we hope that we have secured a partner needed in order to penetrate the Japanese market and which at the same time, has the competence required to be responsible for local service”, says Rolf Hasselström, President and CEO of Opcon AB. The first full-scale Opcon Powerbox started up in February 2008 and produces electricity without any emissions. Opcon Powerbox is adapted to deal with waste heat from as low as 55 ℃ in larger process industries and the power industry, among others. The technology can also be utilized for electricity production on board larger ships. By using waste heat, electricity is produced without supply of more fuel from something that previously went to waste. According to the American energy department there is more waste heat available in American industry than electricity production from all renewable energy sources in the US combined.
