About the Author

Silvia Isabel Rael Almanza is a career nurse, who has been involved in diabetes education for most of her career. In 1992 she became a certified diabetes educator and became part of diabetes education programs. She was Director for Diabetology and Surgical Services in El Paso, Texas. Then the Diabetes Treatment Centers of America in Denver, Colorado at Rose Medical Center, outpatient classes as well. Rose Medical Center hired her to be the inpatient diabetes educator and during this time she was part of the initiation of a centralized glucose reduction factor, which is used throughout the hospital by nurses, doctors, residents, and everyone who deals with diabetes. To date, the hospital still uses the GRF, as originated and in modification. Silvia continues to present the latest information on diabetes at the Medical Center of Aurora in the Diabetes Education Center every week, and continues to be passionate about diabetes education for patients who seek self-management information and motivation.
