LOS ANGELES, Jan. 22, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Christopher M. Hernandez of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been elected chair of the Board of Directors for the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF), one of the nation's largest Latino human service organizations.

MAOF serves more than 125,000 children and adults in need throughout California. Hernandez, a MAOF board member since 2001, was elected to a two-year term as chair.

"I'm honored to lead MAOF during these challenging economic times," said Hernandez, vice president of Special Projects for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "Education and training will be major goals, especially in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, to encourage our young people to pursue careers in those disciplines."

"He brings an impressive background in science and technology in the aerospace industry, including his work on development of unmanned aircraft systems, the B-2 stealth bomber, NASA's Space Shuttle and advanced space launch vehicle concepts."

Hernandez also serves on the Industrial Advisory Board to the College of Engineering at California State University, Long Beach, and is active with the Boy Scouts of America. He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from California State University, Long Beach, and a master's degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan Fellows program.

MAOF's service area covers seven California counties including Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, San Diego, Kern and Monterey. MAOF has more than 40 service locations from as far north as Salinas in Monterey County to Chula Vista in San Diego County. Its services include job training and referrals, adult education, youth programs, senior services, a food bank and free income-tax preparation.
