The IEEE recognized Fujii as a nationally renowned expert in software verification and validation, and software safety analysis. He created the software nuclear safety methodology used today for all nuclear weapons, including the intercontinental ballistic (Minuteman, Peacekeeper, Small Missile), Tomahawk cruise and battleship-launched cruise missile systems, and for the Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine fire control system.

"The IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE and is bestowed upon a very limited number of senior members who have made outstanding contributions to the electrical and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession," said John R. Vig, IEEE president and chief executive officer.

A member of the IEEE's Computer Society Board of Governors, Fujii previously received IEEE awards for Golden Core Member, Outstanding Achievement and Meritorious Service.

Fujii joined Northrop Grumman in 1968. Among his earlier roles, he was vice president of communications and systems technology for the company's Defense Mission Systems Division.
