New Bradway Research Report Identifies 11 Top Performing Tier 1 Banks and Thrifts

Bradway Research Analyzes 11 Top Performing Large Banks and Thrifts That Attained Profitability in the 1st Quartile Against All Banks and Thrifts For Three Consecutive Years

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Feb. 9, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Bradway Research LLC analyzed the profitability of 7,220 banks and thrifts in the U.S for 2006, 2007 and the first three quarters of 2008. Using a proprietary profit scoring methodology, which establishes a level playing field for all banks and thrifts regardless of their size, Bradway Research identified 11 large banks and thrifts with assets exceeding $10 billion that achieved a profitability rank in the first quartile of the entire industry for each of the three years. The report includes an analysis of the business strategies, critical operating metrics, and key information technology vendors used by these 11 top performing large banks and thrifts.

"This analysis shows that a bank can be highly profitable and not be dependent on just one business strategy, geographic location, or the institution's size," said Bill Bradway, founder and managing director of Bradway Research. "These 11 institutions show that, in good times as well as the current economic crisis, the ability to successfully implement a business strategy makes a big difference."

An analysis of the key business strategy pursued by each of the 11 institutions produced a set of four alternatives. The number of branches was not a constraint as five of these institutions had fewer than 100 branches. Key operating characteristics of the 11 top performing large banks and thrifts included, but were not limited to, superior net interest margin, low credit related loss, and strong non-interest income ratios. Three bank technology vendors dominated the technology selections, serving as the primary FinTech vendor for 10 of the 11 institutions.

Geographic diversity is well represented by these top performing banks, as none are headquartered in the same state. The head offices for these institutions are located in California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia.
