IIJ Improves Sender Authentication On the IIJ Secure MX Service

New Feature Adds DKIM Digital Signatures to Outgoing Messages

TOKYO, Feb. 25, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Internet Initiative Japan, Inc., (IIJ) (Nasdaq:IIJI) (TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it has improved the sender authentication function of the integrated email security solution IIJ Secure MX Service by adding digital signatures to customers' outgoing e-mail messages using DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) technology.

DKIM is a sender authentication technology that allows the recipient of an e-mail to authenticate the sender and thus determine the validity of the e-mail through a digital signature attached to the e-mail message by the sender. IIJ Secure MX Service has supported SPF/SenderID since its initial release, and starting in July 2008, the service has checked for DKIM digital signatures on all messages coming through the IIJ Secure MX Service gateway and insert the results of a message evaluation into the message header as a score before delivering it to the customer.

This new feature adds a DKIM digital signature to each of the outgoing messages leaving through the IIJ Secure MX Service gateway. This prevents spoofing or message alteration by third parties and preserves the confidence of recipients in messages coming from the customer's domain. DKIM is effective in defeating phishing schemes that alter mail header information, and it is already in wide-spread use in the United States. By using the IIJ Secure MX Service, customers are able to take advantage of these two types of technology and take even stronger measures to counter spam e-mail.

These companies below have already decided using this feature to append DKIM digital signatures to their outgoing e-mail messages.

 * The Otsuma School Corporation.
 * BANDAI Co., Ltd.
 * The Hokkaido Shimbun Press.
 * Mizuho-DL Financial Technology Co., Ltd.

IIJ will continue to pursue new technologies to build and maintain secure messaging environments.
