Stimulus Focus On Smart Grids May Impact mPhase

Smart NanoBattery Ideal for Reserve Power in Emerging Grids

LITTLE FALLS, N.J., March 10, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The most recent stimulus package has set aside $4.5 billion for smart grid technology advancements which may impact mPhase Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:XDSL) due to their SmartBattery Technology. The Smart NanoBattery is currently being developed as part of the U.S. Army STTR program, and has the flexibility to function within a wide range of applications.

Smart grids deliver electricity to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce cost, and increase reliability. Historically, power grids have been a one way path with energy traveling from the main power stations to end users. With an increased emphasis on alternate energy sources, it is becoming feasible to design technologies that will allow excess electricity generated locally to travel back into the grid for other use. These developments require power monitors and sensors to be located throughout the grid as a means of collecting data and transmitting information to the computer systems that manage and regulate the grid's flow of electricity.

In many cases, these sensor devices will be powered by individual batteries. The mPhase Smart NanoBattery is an attractive power source that could be used to provide emergency back up power to these remote sensors. When the primary power source fails, the Smart NanoBattery would automatically begin powering the sensor to eliminate the possibility of a service interruption. The Smart NanoBattery is effective in this situation because it is both "smart," programmable, and boasts a shelf life of at least 20 years without experiencing any power drain before initial use.

"This application of the Smart NanoBattery into smart grids is a great opportunity for mPhase to function in a system that will vastly improve energy efficiency," said mPhase CEO Ron Durando. "We are pleased that the government recognizes the importance of developing smart grid technology, and believe that mPhase can offer a significant contribution with its Smart NanoBattery."
